Review and Approval of Minutes from the September 11, 2009, Board Meeting
Minutes were approved with no corrections and will be placed in the minute book
Treasurer's Report
Darryl Tocker stated there was no Treasurer's Report to submit. Friends spent $1,500 for the catering of the Literary Landmark Ceremony's Reception. The Friends remains well within the budget for the year. The Friends has raised $125,000 toward the Capital Campaign, but still short of the $500,000 matching goal. There are still a few prospects.
Friends Report on the TLA
Darryl Tocker reported on the TLA project, "You've got a Friend". We will bring in the consulting group Bacon Lee to help libraries determine when a Friend's group is needed and how to build a Friend's group. There will be sessions on making libraries Green with presentation by Boerne Public Library. David Gracy will be presenting his book and will be for a book signing and meet the author. The TLA will be held in San Antonio this year April 14-17.
Texas State Library Report
Darryl Tocker reported that Mrs. Bush came to do some readings for the Library. She chose a piece on women's suffrage. Governor Perry read Travis' letter. We are working on a program inviting former Governors and First Ladies of Texas to read for the Archives.
Darryl Tocker reported that the video presentation created by Derick Hackett is up and ready to go. It is worthwhile to view and is up on the TSL website. The Gates Foundation is working with libraries on how to increase broadband for all the states. In the smaller towns the best connectivity is found in the library. There were two conferences held and were well attended. Warren Buffet is donating his funds to the Gates Foundation; the Gates Foundation is committed to supporting libraries.
Development Report
Charlotte McCann reported that Exxon Mobile didn't want to commit to a donation. She contacted Exxon Mobile through the help of George Bayoud. George said to keep trying elsewhere.
Sandy Pickett asked Charlotte if she had taken a proposal to Governor Clements. Charlotte will take one to him. Cyndi Hughes suggested a development meeting with Charlotte and Jim in January.
Charlotte reported that she took a $50,000 proposal to Bernard Rapaport and he said no. When the stock market climbs 14-15, he will say yes.
Charlotte reported that she is one half and two-thirds finished on proposals for: Albert and Ethel Herzstein Foundation and the Mary Moody Northern Foundation. Sandy Pickett suggested the Abell-Hanger Foundation; she knows people on the board and will write a letter to them. Charlotte had sent a proposal to them that was turned down.
Charlotte proposed sending an end of year fund raising letter for the Challenge Grant. Darryl and Cyndi both said yea to sending the letter.
Video Presentation
Derick presented the video "Expanding the Role of Libraries" which can be viewed on both the TSL website and You Tube. There are three separate videos; Expanding the Role of Libraries, Texas Youth and the internet, and Running a Business through broadband. Derick traveled over 900 miles through Lubbock and down through South West Texas. Derick has done a lot for the State Library and Archives and had great coverage today. Sandy asked if we could put some of it on the website for Friends. Derick reported that today's event was filmed by a company professionally, and will be posted to the website as well as creating cd's to make available. Technical difficulties did not allow for viewing of the video.
