Texas State Library and Archives Commission
Lorenzo de Zavala Archives and Library Building, Room 314, 1201 Brazos Street, Austin, Texas
Members Present: JoAnne Moore, president; Peggy Rudd; Diana Cox; Jenifer Flaxbart
Guests Present: Erica McKewen; Liz DeMoss
President JoAnne Moore called the meeting to order at 3:22 p.m.
Legislative Day Reception
The group discussed the appointment of a chair for the Legislative Day reception committee and it was decided that Dianna Dorman would be asked to serve in this position. Both Peggy Rudd and JoAnne Moore will be calling her. Fundraising and donations for the event will be included in the chairman's duties. It was also decided that Nelda Laney and Patrick Heath would be asked to serve on the reception committee. Jenifer Flaxbart moved that TSLAC approach Dianna Dorman about serving as the Legislative Day reception committee chair; JoAnne Moore seconded.
The date and time of the reception will be February 16, 2005 at 5:00 p.m. The Friends membership will be asked to help publicize this event by making a personal call to their senator or representative. The group discussed asking Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst to speak at the event and/or TLA staff or TSLAC commissioners.
The group discussed how to make the event unique; an event that legislators felt like they needed to attend. Ideas included: printing the event program on invitations, having historical impersonators, display statewide archival treasures, use a school library focus to persuade legislators to attend, calling legislative aides for suggestions about what might provoke legislator attendance, including a press photo opportunity, and having a "Past, Present, and Future" appreciation theme that would show past, present, and future legislation that positively effects TSLAC, culminating with a "here we are now" section, including stats about the number of people served by Texas Libraries (showing that libraries are not becoming obsolete).
Texas Book Festival
The TBF will be held October 29 - 31. Friends members will be asked to volunteer to man the booth. The group discussed the possibility of donating a print (framed facsimile), which John Anderson and Bill Crawford will select, to the Book Festival silent auction. JoAnne Moore moved to spend an amount not to exceed $250.00 on the framing of a print for the TBF silent auction. Jenifer Flaxbart seconded.
Friends Partnership with Texas Stories
Kathleen Jenkins of Texas Stories wrote a grant for financial support from Dell, which she expected to hear about on August 15. The group discussed their contract with Texas Stories and it was decided that they would have it reviewed by legal council, Joe Thrash, Micky Schott, and Chris Brisack. Jenifer Flaxbart moved that the Friends approve the agreement with Texas Stories and Kathleen Jenkins based on review and edit by legal council.
Friends Budget
The group agreed to contribute $1000.00 to the book tour of John Anderson and Bill Crawford, $1000.00 to TSLAC staff travel, $250.00 to the framing of a print for the Texas Book Festival silent auction, and reserve $100.00 for miscellaneous expenses.
President JoAnne Moore adjourned the meeting at 5:37 p.m.
