Meeting Minutes—2002

Friends of Libraries & Archives of Texas Membership Meeting
Texas Library Association Annual Conference
April 24, 2002
3:00 p.m.–4:20 p.m.
Dallas Convention Center, Dallas

President Patrick Heath called the meeting to order. Approximately 20 people were in attendance.

1. Welcome and Call to Order
President Heath introduced the Board members present and welcomed the membership.

2. Approval of Minutes
Marvin Rich moved to approve the minutes from the 2001 annual membership meeting in San Antonio; Sandy Pickett seconded. Motion passed.

3. Treasurer's Report
President Heath outlined the Treasurer's Report in the absence of Mickey Schott, Treasurer. Sandy Melton moved to accept the Treasurer's Report; Carol Bartz seconded. Motion passed.

4. Election of Officers
Board Development Chair Patricia Smith read the committee's nomination of JoAnne Moore as vice president of the Friends Board. By acclamation, the membership approved the nomination.

5. Election of Board Board Development Chair Patricia Smith read the committee's nominations for Board members:

The Honorable Helen Giddings (term to expire Apr. 2005)
Nelda Laney (term to expire Apr. 2004)
Carol Lovelady (term to expire Apr. 2004)
Cathy Park (term to expire Apr. 2003)
Gleniece Robinson (term to expire Apr. 2004)
Harry Robinson (term to expire Apr. 2003)
Marjorie Saulsbury (ex officio, chair of Library Friends, Trustees and Advocates Roundtable)
Darryl Tocker (term to expire Apr. 2003)
William E. Tydeman, Ph.D. (term to expire Apr. 2005)
Ted Whatley (term to expire Apr. 2005)

Patricia Smith also asked the membership to elect Representative Kim Brimer to the Friends Board. At the time of the meeting, he had not yet accepted nomination to the Board.

Ms. Smith thanked the nominees and commented how strong and diverse the Board would become with the election of these new members.

President Heath accepted the committee's report, and by acclamation, the membership elected the full slate of nominees.

6. Membership Report
Membership Committee Chair JoAnne Moore reported that the Friends had 61 members, and 50% of them were charter members. The Membership Committee will be looking at ways to increase membership over the next year.

7. Presentation of 1st Life Membership to Marvin and Shirley Rich
JoAnne Moore and President Heath presented the first life membership to Marvin and Shirley Rich in recognition of their generous support of the Friends. Marvin Rich was present to accept the honor.

8. Presentation of Certificates of Appreciation
President Heath presented a certificate of appreciation to SBC Southwestern Bell, which donated a seed grant of $9,151 in 1997. Anita Meyer was present to accept the honor.

President Heath also noted the contributions of Darryl Tocker of the Tocker Foundation, who donated $1,000 in 2001.

9. State Librarian's Report
Peggy D. Rudd thanked the Friends for their support of the Texas State Library. Ms. Rudd delivered a presentation outlining two donations from the Friends group to the Texas State Library. A donation of $197 supported a lunch for key staff during a two-day strategic planning and leadership retreat. A $4,500 donation was earmarked for two purposes: to microfilm the heavily-used and deteriorating Convict Record Ledgers, 1849-1954, and to install a computer kiosk in the lobby of the Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building.

10. Goals and Future Direction
President Heath reminded the membership of the goals and ideas that were established at the 2001 membership meeting in San Antonio. In addition, some Texas State Library "Wish List" items were presented. Marvin Rich suggested the Friends solicit each system and library district to become members in the Friends.

11. Adjournment
President Heath adjourned the meeting at 4:10 p.m.
